Major Changes to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)| WIC Program benefits| Dr Manju Antil| Wellnessnetic Care


The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) seeks to protect the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at risk for malnutrition by offering supplemental foods that are nourishing, nutrition education, and referrals to medical care and other services.

Who gets the first priority for participation?

·    Women who are pregnant, nursing mothers, and babies who are identified as being at nutritional risk due to major medical issues infants younger than 6 months old whose moms were WIC participants or might have been participants but had major health issues.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommended the first major changes to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) food packages in 35 years in 2006, and state agencies implemented them in 2009 as a result of the US Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service (USDA-FNS) 2007 interim regulation.


Adaptation to the 2009 Food Package Implementation: State and municipal governments, suppliers, and manufacturers were mainly able to adjust; some ongoing issues are connected to market sizes. The viability of possible food packaging modifications from the perspectives of governments, local agencies, suppliers, and manufacturers is crucial for successful implementation. There is evidence that focused nutrition education prior to food packaging modifications can result in favourable behaviour change. This method might be used for future food packaging revisions at the state level.

Changes in Breastfeeding Prevalence: WIC participants are less likely to breastfeed than other low-income moms. The evidence is equivocal as to whether the 2009 food packaging modifications influenced breastfeeding decisions.

Changes in WIC Participation: WIC membership has been falling since 2010, however the percentage of participants by food package category has stayed steady. The underlying reason for the reduction is unknown; however, it is unrelated to the 2009 food packaging revisions. Attention should be paid to retaining the program's usefulness and lowering participation obstacles. Because children aged 1 to less than 5 years make up the bulk of WIC participants, modifications to this meal package (IV) will have the biggest impact on total programme food expenses.

Food Expenditures of WIC Participants: WIC subsidies cover a significant portion of food expenses for participating households. Despite certain limitations in the data, the new research reveals that WIC-participating households spend more on WIC food products than other low-income households.

Changes in Dietary Guidance: Since the IOM 2006 review, significant adjustments have been made to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, advice for those under the age of 2, and Dietary Reference Intakes. The specifications and serving sizes of the foods in the WIC food packages may be affected by these modifications.

Neonates have exceptional perceptual abilities that shed light on the nature of perception and human development in general. Decades of research have tracked the visual and perceptual development of infants (e.g., Johnson, 2011; Maurer & Werker, 2014). People see colour, with a particular emphasis on the first six months following birth. Comprehending how newborns transition from the fundamental sensory experience of a stimulus to a perceptual representation that is beneficial for understanding and interacting with their environment is made possible in large part by the study of colour. Since they have been the subject of significant multidisciplinary research, the neurobiology, sensory mechanisms, and perceptual processes involved in adult colour vision and perception are well characterized (e.g., Conway et al., 2010). Colour is a fundamental component of visual perception; it serves as a cue for a variety of cognitive processes, including communication, perception of objects, situations, and people, and aesthetics (e.g., Elliot et al., 2015). Additionally, as an experimental stimulus, colour may be carefully measured and manipulated.
     

Infants' perceptions of the world are evaluated through their senses and behaviours (Houde, 2006), and as they mature, this evaluation takes on greater significance. This development is influenced by the physical maturity of the infant's sensory organs and the neurological system as well as by the experiences they have in their environment. Infants experience a variety of images, sounds, textures, odours, and tastes, and as a result, they learn a lot about people and objects. As these experiences accumulate in their memories, the perceptions of the infants gradually develop (Morris, 2002a). In their study on the movement perception of three-month-old infants, Sommerville et al. (2005) discovered that when infants face an object, they immediately form action goal-oriented representations. They also found that there is a significant positive correlation between infants' goal-oriented actions and their observations of other people's goal-oriented action experiences.

In their study, Bhatt and Waters (1998) found that young children can recognise three-dimensional forms. Infants are known to respond differently to novel stimuli, but when the push becomes persistent, they acquire accustomed to it and become sensitive to even small changes. This demonstrates how early identification and preference of many senses occur. The ability of an infant's sense organs to work from birth promotes learning in later stages. The senses play a crucial role in learning (Stalk, 1993). Infants may shift their multifunctional coding of object representations to a scenario when necessary, according to Schweinle and Wilcox's (2004) research.

The perception, which plays a significant role in human existence, begins during pregnancy and is actively continued during infancy and youth. Children attempt to comprehend their surroundings beginning at birth by employing their senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch (Dönmez et al. 2000). The senses begin to work at birth, even if they are not fully formed. Consequently, it is considered that they progressively begin working before birth (Gander and Gardiner, 2010). One of the most crucial factors in preparing a child for life is the perception process, which begins with birth. The most important time in this process is infancy.   

FACTORS AFFECTING PERCEPTION:

Perception is the process of giving meaning to the senses after organising them in different ways. Just as different people might perceive stimuli in various ways, one individual can also interpret the same stimulus differently from a different perspective (MEB, 2004). Investigations into the internal and environmental elements that influence different perception types may be divided into these two groups.

Internal Factors: Either physiologic or psychological variables inside the body affect perception. Emotions, needs, mental attitudes, preparedness, and inculcations are some of these elements. Perceptions are influenced by emotions, therefore when someone is liked; other people tend to exaggerate their favourable traits. Hunger makes food seem more appetizing to someone, therefore needs have an impact on perception. Things that are in accordance with the accepted notions are easily perceived, whereas things that are not adopted are overlooked. Mental attitudes have an impact on perceptions. When someone's photo is revealed and they are informed that they are a criminal, they will be seen as such since they are ready to do so. Psychological illusions are caused by emotional states like fear, rage, and worry, which can alter perception. Perception is impacted by hypnosis and indoctrination. Ambiguous forms can be assessed and understood in light of inculcations (MEB, 2004).

External Factors: Perceptions are influenced by extrinsic physiological or social variables. Perception depends on both the environment in which the item or event is present and the environment in which the perceiver is present. A black background makes the same shade of grey appear lighter while a white background makes it appear darker. In colder air than in warmer air, a glass of cold water is viewed differently (MEB, 2004). The abundance of stimuli and perception development are closely related. The growth of perception and development may be positively impacted by interaction, communication, experimentation, and the power of discriminating (Aral, 2011). According to many perspectives, external factors are made up of the characteristics of things and existences as well as the nature of their effects on us.                                                                       

Hence, we can conclude it, the research on newborn colour perception as a whole suggests that during the first six months after birth, visual and perceptual development happens incredibly quickly. As infants, babies can hardly sense colour, but by the age of six months, they begin to perceptually organize, categorise, and maintain colour perception, and their sensitivity to colour corresponds to statistical regularities of natural settings.

Ignoring yourself and not taking care of your personal needs can be an anxiety trigger. Whether you're not showering regularly, skipping meals, staying up too late, or not reaching the physician purposely, it's crucial to evaluate these behaviors and work to take better care of yourself. 

Some common habits are caused by anxiety.

Drowning your anxiety in meaningless activities e.g. endless scrolling on social media, binge/emotional eating, excessive shopping, smoking, alcohol or other drug use 

Predicting and Rehearsing

Trying to predict the events of the day or what someone will say, creating elaborate branching plans when this or that happens but shutting down when it inevitably goes wrong 

Procrastination

When we want to do something and come up with ideas for it but put it off or fail to do it completely. We usually think of procrastination as laziness, but it is an issue with dealing with difficult emotions including anxiety.


Anxiety, stress, and discomfort are extremely good friends, and the feeling of discomfort often leads to you doing these limiting behaviors to reduce anxiety....which creates a cycle.

To break out of this cycle, you have to accept this discomfort instead of trying to suppress it, refocus your attention on your task at hand, and replace these with healthier behaviors even if they are uncomfortable at first.

The term"victims of an acid attack" may be legally correct, but it elicits sympathy from others around the victim despite the fact that they were not at fault and instead creates a sense of helplessness. It was someone else who hurt them on purpose. The phrase "acid attack survivor" refers to someone who has managed to live despite all chances, including having many operations, going to court, confronting the public, and receiving medical care. 

Reasons to Worry

1.    It can happen in any class, caste, gender, region, religion, profession, rural/urban area, socio-economic status etc. 

2.      Acid attacks can be carried out both in public as well as in private places.

3.   It is not a random or a natural phenomenon but a deep-rooted social phenomenon of conflicts.

4.      Acid attacks are often used as a form of revenge against others.

5.      In most cases, the attacker is known to the victim. It can be a friend, colleague, neighbour etc.

6.      The attackers often tie a cloth on their face to hide their identity making it easy for them to escape punishment.

7.      Sometimes, some people are not the targets but end up being unintended victims because they were near the intended victims and acid splashes on them also

 Occurrence in India

The Indian news reports reviewed that in nearly 34% of cases, victims were between 18 and 29 years old. In 14% of cases, victims were between three months and 17years old including children who were unintended victims. 

Complications of Acid Attack victims

  1.  Loss of limb, vision, and hearing, if limbs, eyes or ears are affected
  2.  Depression, flashbacks and nightmares are a big issue.
  3.  Psycho-social issues will be a big challenge.
  4.  Hair is often lost
  5.  The bone may be damaged in severe cases.
  6.   Lips may be permanently flared, exposing the teeth.
  7.   Breasts may be destroyed completely.
  8.   The physical characteristics/symptoms of acid attack victims are as follows:
  9.   Disfigured appearance is one of the major symptoms of an acid attack.

Disability of Acid Attack victims

The disability in acid attack victims is considered by estimating the extent of damage in terms of the area and depth of the burns in different parts of the body. The percentage of disability is computed using the formula a+b (90-a)/90 where a= higher value and lower value. 

The total % of permanent impairment/disability will not exceed 100%.

Facilitating the Disability Certification of such children through the State/District Medical Boards under the Department of Social Security and Empowerment, so that children can avail all the facilities in education, including monthly scholarships, scribe policies, extra time during examinations and all the relevant educational Rights. 

Causes

Some of the causes in India are as follows:

  • Gender inequality and discrimination are one of the major causes. For example, for marriage, relationship, proposal etc. Acid attack as a form of female foeticide or female infanticide shows another form of violence against women. 
  • Cheap and easy availability of acid is another cause of acid attack violence.
  • Sometimes, accidental acid incidents may happen like while cleaning the toilet at home or in factories that use acid for production, cleaning etc.

Treatment and Support

Medical treatment

The Medical treatment can include the following:

Since acid attack burns may result in wound infections, proper therapy for those infections may be offered. The moveable parts must be dressed appropriately. Techniques for pain relief are available. If the skin is irritated or itchy, anti-itch medicine may be prescribed after consulting with the doctor.

Surgery: The most frequent operations done on acid attack patients are debridement, skin grafting, and z-plasties (improvement of the cosmetic appearance of scars). Debridement is a treatment that involves cleaning or removing debris and dead tissue, as well as the doctor maintaining the cleanliness of the burned tissue. The most challenging component of acid burn surgery is intricate face surgery (Reconstructive surgery). The number of procedures necessary varies from person to person and is mainly dependent on the degree of the patient's burns.

Ophthalmic surgery: Since the eyes are the most affected part during the attack, extra care should be taken for the required surgeries and follow-up of checkups and treatments.

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy can be given regularly to enhance the movement of the body parts, prevent contractures, maintain good joint movements, provide good muscle tone and prevent scarring and deformities. The physical rehabilitation consists of prevention of scar contracture, restoration of the normal range of motion (ROM), prevention and minimization of hypertrophic scar and improvement in muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance and to help the burns survivor to return to function and performance activities of daily living.

Haemoglobin levels in the blood can be constantly monitored.

Skin grafting or replacement: A procedure that involves attaching healthy skin from another part of the body to the burn wound.

6. Be willing to accept silence

Introverts hate having to talk all the time during conversations. Accepting that there will be times when the conversation will be silent but still enjoying each other's presence is much more helpful than forcing out talk.

7. Establish a space for them in the house where they can be alone

Apart from scheduling alone time, also try agreeing on a specific which acts as their 'safe spot' where they can recharge. after a long day by themselves.

In a world built for extroverts, being an introvert's safe space as well as being kind and welcoming towards their needs creates a much better relationship dynamic as compared to pressuring them or trying to 'fix' their introversion.

There are plenty of introvert-extrovert and introvert-introvert relationships out there that are happy and healthy. Introversion should not be a barrier to that!

But I'm here to tell you that being ghosted by a guy can be a lifesaver. When a guy suddenly disappears on you, he's actually doing you a favour. Let me explain...

First of all, here's a harsh but honest truth: he's clearly not into you. It was never going to work out. (And that's his loss, not yours.) If a guy can just drop you without a second thought, then he's clearly not the high-quality man you deserve. And in fact, by vanishing without a trace, he's saving you a lot of heartache and headache in the long run.

You're worth a man who will cherish you and treat you like a precious jewel, not a little boy who doesn't have the emotional capacity to talk about his feelings and be honest with you.

You don't have time for these types of guys. Imagine if you'd wasted more of your precious time and energy on an unworthy man! Now that would be a real tragedy. Eventually, he would have shown his true colours, you'd realise he's not the man for you, and you'd have to do the work of removing him from your life.

Hey, hello High-quality women, here we are again meeting in our latest articles, in our today article being a marital therapist, I am going to discuss dating rules, for girls, how to find out if he deserving person for you or not, and whether is he a high-quality man or not

Don't give a man a second date if he doesn't do these things...

1. He's made no effort to look nice to you. Not saying he needs to wear a suit and tie at all times, but he needs to look like he cares what you think of him and wants to impress you. Even if it's just a nice pair of jeans and a smart jacket, he needs to try. If he doesn't care what you think of him, then he doesn't care about you, period.

2. He doesn't hold the door open for you. There are just basic manners. By holding a door open for you, a man is showing that he's chivalrous and wants to cherish and take care of you.


A guy who doesn't do this wasn't brought up right... he isn't a gentleman and doesn't know how to treat a high-value woman you.

3. He only talks about himself. Of course, you want to learn more about him and get to know him... but if he monologues about himself nonstop without giving you a chance to speak, and he doesn't ask you anything about yourself, then he thinks he's the most important, interesting person in the room. This guy isn't going to be capable of giving you the devotion and attention you deserve.

4. He's rude to the waitstaff. How a man treats people who are serving him is a great indicator of what he's like. A high-caliber man treats everyone with respect, regardless of their social status or position. But if he's rude, demanding, or condescending to the waitstaff, then it's a pretty clear sign that he's not that nice a guy, and not worthy of your time.

5. He doesn't pick up the bill. I feel strongly about this one, and for good reason: if a man asks you to split the bill or pay your way, how the heck is he going to be when it comes to providing for you? He is not a high-standard man at al and will ditch you soon once you stop putting your bit financially, Just forget about the equality concept, and focused towards is he capable enough or not. a gentleman, will treat you like his women from the first date. 


Let's pay your man, for you, because my dear when you let him pay for you, it's the time when you respect him more, and could place your 100 percent surrender to him because you would start sensing protection in his company, If you want to be taken care of like you deserve whilst you're looking after the house and raising a family, you need a high-quality man who knows how to provide for his woman. Ladies if you smell like he is not caring and protective, dont give him 2nd date.


It's important though, if you plan your family with him in future, you must be aware about is he capable enough to handle a family with you or not.  A well-deserving man always takes care of her woman like a queen. He notice every small details about you. So let him love you, let him protect you, let him pay for you.

6. And finally... He expects sex on the first date. This is a big one. A hug? A kiss on the hand whilst he gazes into your eyes? (Cute.) A peck on the cheek? These are all acceptable and show that he's willing to be patient...


he knows a high-value woman doesn't give it away on the first date, because she knows she's worth waiting for. But if he tries to get you to go back to his place, or gets handsy or does anything that you're uncomfortable with, then that's a HELL NO. If he feels entitled to put his hands on your juicy self after just one date, then he either feels entitled or thinks you're cheap. Hold your head high and walk away.
